What is the date?
Saturday December 6th. Teams need to report from 8am for scutineering so easy on the cider the night before. The racing will commence at 10am and finish at 6pm and afterwards you can all swap stories of how you rear wheel steered passed a Piaggio at the hairpin.
Where is it?
The event is being hosted by RAF Benson Motorcycle Club. The course is a coned area on the airstrip. It is a working airfield so make sure you obey the marshalls or you may end up as propeller chop suey. RAF Benson, PASF Team 1, Wallingford,Oxon OX10 6AA. Click here for a map.
What will the weather be like?
It's England. It might be hot and sunny or cold with hail and snow. Or just a bit cloudy with a gentle south-easterly. Or not.
What are the team requirements?
Four riders per team although at least one is usually too hungover or too scared to take part. No racing licence required, not many braincells required.
What are the vehicle requirements?
Each moped entered in the Mopedathon will be required to pass scrutineering. We appreciate that the machines entered will mostly be approaching the end of their useful life so extreme crapness is anticipated.
- Engine capacity must not exceed 50cc for two strokes and 90cc for four strokes.
- One moped per team.
- Mopeds to be adequately silenced, excessively noisy bikes will fail scrutineering.
- All glass items (headlamps, indicators etc) are to be removed or taped up.
- Mopeds must have adequate front and rear brakes. (does not mean left and right shoe)
- Tyres are to be in a safe condition and have reasonable amount of tread.
- Mopeds must have a clearly on/off (kill) switch (a Ty-wrap on the HT lead will not do).
- The fuel system is to be free of leaks, the tank is to have a sealing cap and have means of shutting off the fuel supply.
- Mini Moto’s are not classified as mopeds. These are the little bikes that 6 year olds with ASBO's ride around old people's homes. They are not permitted.
Please note there will also be some special awards so feel free to get painting and pimping. In the interests of safety, nuclear warheads are not permitted.
What are the rider safety requirements?
Riders are to wear clothing that will afford adequate protection in the likely event of a crash. These will be:
- One or two piece leathers or equivalent protection jacket and trousers.
- Full or open face helmet – must confirm to British Standards.
- Leather Gloves.
- Leather Boots.
- Leather whips (optional)
How much will it cost?
Not a lot. Just acquire a crap moped off Ebay and a pledge to raise at least £100 which will go towards this years chosen charity, Breast Cancer Care.
